Start The Next Killer Web 2.0 Site For Free

Every webmaster knows that open source software is wicked cool! I used to think open source software meant just Linux software but then I found a few that were made for Windows too. But I didn’t realise that there were open source versions of full websites. Especially Web 2.0 type sites. Here are a few interesting versions of current Web 2.0 sites that I’ve found:

Online Collaborations:

Grab them while you can. Pligg is being sold off on Mashable. I personally don’t think the new owners will start charging for it. They’ll probably just do what Wordpress do and provide consultancy services instead. But you never know!

If you find any more, just leave a comment :)

Don’t waste your money on Million Dollar Wiki

I don’t know about you but I think this Million Dollar Wiki idea is a novel idea. It’s a clever innovation on the Million Dollar Homepage. However, I wouldn’t recommend buying a page.

Most newbies will probably make the assumption that just because it’s a wiki that it’ll automatically be given some Google love. The reasons that Google ranks Wikipedia so highly are because it’s a collaboration of worldwide editors and because EVERYONE links to Wikipedia when they want to reference something.

But Million Dollar Wiki is a PAID wiki. Only you’re not paying for a “review” like on a paid directory. You’re paying for a page with links. And when Google finds a few newbie webmasters start selling some for their links on their paid wiki pages, those unlucky enough to have bought a page will likely find that their $100 will have been wasted. What’s more, they’ll likely find the websites that they’ve linked out to have been penalised.

This wouldn’t apply however to something like the Million Dollar homepage. This is because they’re selling pixels; not links.

Nevertheless, it is a novel idea….though I don’t think it has any longevity. Just my 2 cents (or 1 pence).

Going For The Next Stage And Changing Online Strategy

For the past year, most of my sites have been mini-sites. Cheap to build or buy and fairly easy to market (mainly through SEO and posting on forums). This is especially good when you’ve got limited resources (translation: little money!).

Now is the time to go to the next stage. Building flagship websites.

My next site is going to be based on Pligg, which is the open source version of digg. I’m not sure how well it’s going to go but hopefully it’ll be something different to digg and its competitors. Unlike the rest of them, the site is going to be targeted towards a different audience….kind of like Sphinn :)

Hopefully it’ll be stirring up some controversy and maybe even get a mention on sites like Mashable and Techcrunch.

Here’s to the next stage…

New Google Adsense Referrals Products

Google have finally started expanding their Adsense referrals range! Instead of just promoting Google’s own products, you can now promote all kinds of products from other companies. Not sure about their competitiveness against already established affiliate marketing networks though.

Google AdSense Referrals

The good thing is payments vary in currency according to the program you choose. Most of them pay in US dollars but there are a few that pay in Canadian dollars and Indian Rupees.

Most of the ads look just like normal adsense ads though there are a few graphical banners.

They still need to work on their search though! What do asthma medicines and mannequins have to do with viagra??

Anyway, it will be interesting to see when they add this to Adwords.

Blueprint To Starting A Custom Online Store From Scratch On A Shoestring Budget

One of the most basic ways to make money online is by selling your own products. I’ve spoken to a few successful internet entrepreneurs who run successful online stores (trust me, they make a VERY comfortable living) and have compiled this list of tasks they go through to build their network of online money makers.

  1. Identify a need and market. Do some research and find out what items are related to that market. It’s preferable to sell items that can give you a high profit margin but are still affordable and competitive in the market. Products that are related to celebrities or fashion usually fit into this category
  2. Find dropshippers for your chosen items. E-sources is a good choice for both UK based and international dropshippers and wholesalers, whilst DOBA is more suitable for US based dropshippers. You can also do a Google search for dropshippers of specific items.
  3. Sign up to Paypal and download one of the following free e-commerce shopping carts:
  4. Sign-up with a good hosting provider. There’s a good list of free hosting providers you can start off with.
  5. Website installation and configuration. You can either install and configure the website yourself or outsource this to someone on elance, getafreelancer or some other freelancing website for a . Don’t forget to include a web analytics application like Google Analytics and Statcounter into the site.
  6. Setup your records. Track your finances using a site like moneytrackin or a spreadsheet (ex: outgoing payments, revenues, expense, etc). For customer relationship management, download the free Sugar Open Source.
  7. Market your online store. Sell a few items on eBay, advertise through PPC, email your friends, market on myspace and other online communities, start a blog, partner with other online stores. Check out the rest of this blog for more ideas on getting traffic to your site.
  8. Start an affiliate program and recruit affiliates. Use an inhouse, custom-built affiliate management software that you can get designed and integrated by a freelancer from the freelancing site used in step 5 above or install a bespoke affiliate marketing software from about $50.
  9. Continue your growth. Increase your product lines, improve your conversions, expand your marketing, automate your processes and keep your customers happy….or if you want to move on to other things you can sell your website to another budding entrepreneur on eBay or Sitepoint.

Myspace Resources Website

Myspace Resources Website Script. Contains layouts, generators, codes, friend train, upload tools, graphics and more.

Comes with Google AdSense built in. Just add your Adsense publisher ID and you’re off!

Add this script to an existing website to keep people coming back! Or sign up with a free hosting site instead and start a standalone site.

Download it now for free.

Online Stores You Can Start For Free

Most affiliate programs give you a bunch of text links and banners. But there are also affiliate programs that are similar to white label programs. They give you fully fledged sites without needing to promise waves of traffic or even pay for hosting or domain names. Usually, you are provided with a sub-domain name (like yourstore.mainsite.com). I’ve made a list of sites where you can start online stores for free.

Bravisa
